ARMNHMR, Whales & Adalaide Adams - Stay Away

Adalaide Adams gets one line out clean before the whole arrangement starts pulling at her from underneath, and that tug is the entire emotional engine of “Stay Away.” This is melodic dubstep in the ARMNHMR mold, big feelings bolted to a drop with real teeth, the Monstercat house style where the yearning and the aggression are meant to be the same gesture. Whales brings the low-end nastiness, a growl in the first drop that sounds like it’s trying to swallow the vocal whole, and the standoff between her clean topline and that grinding bass is where the track actually lives. Around 2:15 they gut the whole thing back to just her voice and a piano before the second drop hits noticeably harder than the first. The vocal is carrying weight a lesser hook would buckle under. Three producers who could each headline a track alone, deciding to pile into one, and somehow nobody ends up standing on anybody’s foot. It reaches for the rafters and, more often than not, gets there. Melodic dubstep gets written off a lot; this is the argument against doing that.
