“Crash Out” is exactly as unhinged as the title threatens, and then a little more. YDG and ARMNHMR take a genuinely fragile sad alex topline and proceed to demolish it — the verse is all soft vocal and held breath, and the drop is a colour-bass meltdown that sounds like the sadness finally snapping in half. That contrast is the entire hook. You get lured in by the tender part with your guard down, and then the floor simply gives out beneath you. sad alex’s voice cutting back through the chaos in the second drop is the detail that stops this being just another loud Monstercat banger; there’s a real emotion being screamed underneath all the carnage. The sound design is stupidly detailed, every bass growl bent into a slightly different shape so the drop never once repeats itself across its runtime. I caught myself pulling the involuntary “yikes” face at the switch-up, the one you make when a producer does something you didn’t think was strictly allowed. Monstercat have been on a real run of these emotive-then-devastating tracks lately, and this sits near the top of that pile. It’s cathartic in a way I genuinely did not expect from a song with a title this dumb, and I say that having played it far too loud four times before lunch.
