• Zenar, Nicky Jam - Te Conocí

Nicky Jam over a Spinnin dance beat is exactly as glossy and oversized as that sentence sounds. Te Conocí is big, festival-aimed dance music built around a reggaeton-tinged vocal from one of the biggest names the genre has, and your mileage comes down entirely to how you feel about that lane. For me it mostly works, because the drop has an actual melodic idea under it rather than just a drum pattern and a tag. Zenar keeps the production tight and uncluttered, which is the right instinct when your vocalist is the main event, and Nicky Jam’s voice carries a swagger the glossy build would otherwise lack, grounding the Euro-dance sheen in something with hips. The breakdown leans on a plucky, almost tropical synth line that I can picture annoying people and delighting me in equal measure. The second drop pitches that synth up and lets the vocal ad-libs run loose over it, and that is the thirty seconds the whole track exists for. It is engineered for one specific slot, 1am, somewhere warm, drinks in hand. In a grey Canadian October, a record built purely to make a room feel like summer is not nothing.

1 min on this. Less time than the wait for the drop in a Coldplay 'banger'.
