Poilievre is sitting at 37% while Carney runs a 66% approval rating, his own seat is now something pundits openly game out losing, and the party that was supposed to stroll into government is watching two-thirds of the country say they’d rather keep the banker. So he did the thing every cornered politician does when the affordability pitch stops selling: he found someone smaller to blame. This week it’s “very hard caps” on immigration, and the line he said out loud is that he wants more people leaving the country than coming into it. That’s not a housing plan or a grocery plan. It’s a plan to make the newcomer the reason your life costs too much.
Here’s the part he’s counting on you not to notice. The guy whose entire brand was the price of a house and a cart of food has quietly stopped talking about the price of a house and a cart of food, because the honest version of that story ends at the people funding his party. Your rent went up because someone owns the building and wants more of your paycheck. Your groceries went up because a handful of chains set the shelf price and Trump’s tariffs bleed across the border into everything on it. None of that is the fault of the nurse who flew in from Manila to staff a ward nobody else will, or the kid driving for a delivery app at 1am. Poilievre knows this. He also knows “blame the grocery chain” doesn’t survive a donor call and “blame the immigrant” polls, so he picked the one that costs him nothing and costs them everything.
That’s the whole trick, and it’s ancient. When a man loses the argument about who’s actually squeezing you, he doesn’t concede — he points down the ladder and hopes you swing at whoever’s below you instead of looking up at who’s holding it. Carney isn’t winning because Carney is thrilling. Carney is winning because Poilievre ran out of enemies he was allowed to name and reached for the one that’s always sitting on the shelf, cheap and pre-approved. Don’t take it down off the shelf for him.
