OVERTONE - Alone

You’ve heard a hundred tracks that sound like Alone and somehow this is the one that stuck to me this week. It’s the melodic, slightly melancholy electronic lane MrSuicideSheep has built a whole empire on, polished pop instincts welded to a proper drop. OVERTONE keep it patient, a soft vocal and a simple piano figure circling for a while before the low end finally shows up. When it does the drop is warm rather than aggressive, more a swell than a punch, the kind that lifts a quiet evening without demanding anything back. There’s a filtered synth stab about halfway that pans hard across your headphones, the one moment the mix shows off. The vocal sells the loneliness in the title without milking it, a single repeated line that gets heavier each loop. Then the whole thing dissolves into reverb and ends before it wears out its welcome. Ideal for the exact mood of staring out a bus window pretending your life is a film.
