Lost Sky, Chris Linton - Heaven & Hell

NCS tracks carry a reputation for being wallpaper behind gaming montages, and Lost Sky spent years being the exception people pointed to when they wanted to argue the label was more than that. “Heaven & Hell” keeps the argument going. Chris Linton sings it with more grit than the copyright-free lane usually attracts, a slightly frayed edge on the top notes that sells the push-pull the title is promising, so the whole thing feels lived-in rather than session-perfect. Lost Sky builds around him with that clean, melodic drop-pop that made “Fearless” a hundred-million-play monster, except this one has a darker undertow, a minor-key heaviness in the second half that the early hits mostly sidestepped in favor of pure uplift. The drop leads with song instead of screech, a vocal-driven hook you could hum walking home rather than a pile of sound design begging to be reposted. There’s a bell-like counter-melody threading through the back end that I only caught on the third listen and now cannot stop hearing every time. What I keep respecting about this act is how earnest they let themselves be; there’s no ironic distance, no wink, no hedging the emotion in case someone thinks it’s corny. It just commits, fully, to the feeling, and commitment is half of why any of this works. Free-to-use music this hooky has no business being this easy to actually feel something to. Put it on for a montage if you must, but it deserves better than a background slot.
