• Kompany & LAYZ - Hit Marker

I put this on to soundtrack cleaning my kitchen and ended up standing over the sink doing the head-bang thing you do when nobody’s watching. “Hit Marker” is Kompany and LAYZ making exactly the kind of dubstep the title promises; the name is a Call of Duty reference and the drop lands with roughly the same subtlety as a killstreak. This is the ignorant end of the genre, all mid-range snarl and drops that sound like a server rack being pushed down stairs, and I mean that with total affection. There’s a section in the second half where the rhythm stutters into a stop-start pattern that keeps faking you out about where the next hit lands, and it turns a straight-ahead banger into something you actually have to pay attention to. Kompany’s whole thing is making music for people who grew up with a controller in their hands, and it wears that on its sleeve. No vocal, no melody to speak of, and zero interest in being respectable. It’s dumb, heavy fun and fully committed to being both. Put it on the biggest speaker you have access to and apologize to the neighbours later.

1-min read. About as long as a Coldplay key change takes to ruin a song.
