Zero - SHOOTA

The best sound on “SHOOTA” is a bass note that arrives bent slightly out of tune, like the track is sneering at you. I’ve got no biography for Zero and the tune doesn’t ask for one. It’s riddim-adjacent dubstep, all triplet bass stabs and empty space, built for the exact moment a crowd wants to headbang in unison. It’s repetitive by design; one nasty three-note figure locks in early and then spends four minutes refusing to let go. I put it on expecting to bail after thirty seconds and sat through the whole thing nodding like an idiot instead. The drums are almost an afterthought, a skeleton kick-and-snare whose only purpose is to get out of the bassline’s way. There’s a scream sample buried in the second half that I could honestly live without, but the low end more than pays for it. On laptop speakers it’s a novelty. On anything with a real sub it rearranges your sternum.
