Heard this come on in a friend’s car at night on the motorway and it fit the moment so perfectly I made them rewind it. Greta Svabo Bech is the voice behind Deadmau5’s “Raise Your Weapon,” which got her a Grammy nomination back when that still meant something, and her own material has always deserved more ears than it gets. “Shut Up & Sing” in this AG Rewrite is built around her voice, which is the correct decision, because it’s a genuinely strange and beautiful instrument, all air and edges. The production keeps things restrained, a pulsing low end and a few well-placed synths that clear out of the way whenever she reaches for a big note. It builds slowly and never quite explodes the way you keep expecting it to, and that withholding is the whole appeal. There’s a moment near the end where the beat drops out entirely and it’s just her and a single held chord, and I got actual chills the first time. It’s electronic music that trusts you to sit with the quiet, which is rarer than it should be, and it stayed in my head for the rest of the drive.
