• Ghost Jr - 2 Phones

Stumbled into this at 1am somewhere down a Dim Mak rabbit hole and it was the first thing in an hour that made me stop scrolling. 2 Phones is hard to pin to a single genre, which is most of why I like it, a dark, bass-heavy electronic track that pulls from trap, from G-house, from whatever Ghost Jr felt like grabbing, held together by attitude more than any one sound. The title nods at the Kevin Gates track and the whole thing carries that same menacing late-night swagger, a slow tempo, a bassline that drips, a vocal sample chopped into a taunt. It is sleazy in a way most electronic music is too clean to attempt anymore, built for a car with the windows down in a part of town your mother warned you about. The drop does not explode so much as ooze, the bass rolling in thick and unhurried while a detuned synth needles over the top. There is a confidence in how little it tries to impress you, no drops stacked on drops, just a groove that trusts itself completely. I know nothing about Ghost Jr and after this I want to know everything. The best kind of 1am discovery.
