MAYETRIX - Close My Eyes

The snare on “Close My Eyes” hits like a screen door slamming, all crack and no body, and that cheapness is exactly right for the kind of trap MAYETRIX is building here. This is Monstercat’s colder, harder edge, the lane where the melody is a ghost and the low end does the emoting. A pitched vocal loops the title down to a syllable and a half until it stops meaning anything and just becomes another percussion hit, which is the trick good trap has always run. The drop trades the expected 808 slide for these short, punched-out bass notes that leave gaps you could park a car in, and those gaps are where the whole thing breathes. I put it on expecting background noise and got about four minutes of forward lean instead. There’s a detuned synth stab in the second half that sounds genuinely unwell, in the best possible way. Trap that trusts space over clutter, which is rarer than the streaming numbers would ever have you believe.
