• F.G. Noise - Afterburn

Afterburn goes off exactly like its name, no slow seduction, just ignition. F.G. Noise works in trance, the genuinely fast and emotional kind that the big festival stages mostly abandoned years ago, and this is a reminder of how much adrenaline the genre still has in the tank when somebody actually floors it. The track is all momentum, a relentless rolling bassline under a melody that climbs and climbs and then detonates into the sort of hands-in-the-air release trance was invented to deliver. There is no irony anywhere in it, which is its best quality by a mile. It believes completely in the big emotional payoff and refuses to apologize for wanting one. Trance at this tempo is a drug with a very specific effect, and Afterburn administers a full dose with no warning label. I had genuinely forgotten how much I missed being walloped by a melody this unsubtle. Turns out the answer is quite a lot.

1-minute read. Already more thought than the average 'Yellow' replay.
