I was three coffees into a grim Tuesday when the breakdown on Empty Space landed and I had to sit down. Key4050 make the big, unapologetic kind of trance, and paired with Bo Bruce they’ve built something that goes straight for the throat lump. Her voice is the anchor, a little cracked and human, keeping the enormous production from floating off into festival vapour. The arrangement plays the long game: minutes of patient tension, then at 2:30 it collapses to almost nothing, her vocal alone over one held chord, the silence stretched until it aches. Then the lead comes in, and it’s the sort of soaring, uncomplicated melody that either bypasses your defences entirely or leaves you cold, no middle ground. It bypassed mine. There’s a wall of detuned synths in the last drop so wide it feels less like a sound and more like weather. What I respect is how much the payoff is earned by the restraint before it, rather than just handed over at maximum volume. People love to act embarrassed about trance until one of these breakdowns catches them off guard. Mine caught me stone-sober on a work morning and landed anyway. Three plays later the Tuesday felt survivable.
