Sorley x Mike Dunn - Phreaky (Extended Mix)

Mike Dunn does not miss, and he’s not about to start now. The Chicago house originator, a man who was making this music when most producers releasing today weren’t born, teams with Sorley for “Phreaky” and hands over a straight shot of jackin’ house with dirt under its nails. This is the real Chicago tradition: a relentless bassline, a filtered vocal loop repeating one phrase until it becomes a mantra, drums that swing instead of stomp. Dunn’s whole thing has always been groove over spectacle, the belief that the right loop looped long enough is its own reward, and Phreaky proves the point across seven tireless minutes. The vocal is filthy in the old-school sense, a come-on chopped and teased rather than shouted, and it carries the track without ever fully arriving. There’s no drop to wait for here; the groove is the event, and it’s plenty. Hearing a founder of this whole genre still make it sound this alive, decades in, is the opposite of a nostalgia act.
