This one’s a proper collision of eras. Mike Dunn is Chicago house royalty and Ahmed Spins comes out of the newer Afro-house wave, and “Phunky” (extended mix, the only way house should ever be served) fuses the two into something that genuinely struts. The bassline is all analog warmth, that classic Chi-town bump, and Dunn’s vocal — you clock the voice the second it comes in — sits on top like a preacher working a Sunday crowd. Ahmed Spins brings the modern low-end weight and a hypnotic percussive swing rolling underneath it all. Give it until the 3-minute mark, where the track finally opens up completely and the groove just locks; on a good system the kick catches you square in the sternum. This is music built for the fourth hour of a night, not the first. No drops engineered for a fifteen-second clip, no rush anywhere in it, just a groove that trusts you to stay with it. Deeply, gloriously unbothered. Exactly what I want house to sound like when I’m not in the mood to think.
