You already know if you’re a Slow Magic person, but stick around even if you’re not. The masked producer has been making this glowing, live-drum-driven electronic music for years, and teaming with Beacon School on “Need U” pushes it somewhere warmer and more song-shaped than usual. What gets me is the drumming — real kit energy, played with actual hands, tumbling through the track instead of sitting flat on a grid. It gives the whole thing a heartbeat where most electronic music settles for a pulse. The vocal is chopped into this yearning little loop that repeats the title until it stops meaning anything and starts meaning everything, a trick that shouldn’t work as often as it does. There’s a stretch near the end where the drums go double-time and the track turns into a brief, full-on catharsis before dissolving. It’s been in heavy rotation all week and I keep catching new movements in that drum take. Slow Magic remains one of the most underrated acts in this lane, and this is a lovely reminder of it. Headphones, eyes closed, ideally somewhere with a view.
