Seven - Headed / Aldgate

I put this on to check whether my headphones were dying and instead lost twenty minutes to it. Seven makes the kind of deep, rolling dubstep that doesn’t announce itself, the sort that sits at 140 and rewards patience instead of grabbing you by the collar. “Aldgate” is the one that got me: a sub bassline so low it barely reads as a note on laptop speakers and turns into a physical thing on anything with a woofer. The percussion is sparse and dubby, all rimshots and negative space, closer to soundsystem culture than any festival main stage. “Headed” runs warmer, a little more melody threaded through the murk, but both share that same unhurried confidence. This is music made for a dark room and a big rig, not a phone speaker on the bus, and I felt slightly guilty auditioning it on the latter. There’s a whole lineage of London dubstep that never chased the drop-heavy money and just kept the pressure low and constant, and Seven is clearly still listening to it.
