Oden & Fatzo x ASTELS - Take Our Time (Extended Mix)

This is the most fun I’ve had with a house record in a fortnight, and it barely lets up across the whole extended cut. Oden & Fatzo have turned into one of the most dependable names in that cheeky, bass-forward strain of house that refuses to take itself seriously, and with ASTELS on board they’ve built something aimed squarely at peak-time grins. The bassline is the star, a fat, gurgling low end that bounces on the offbeat and drags your shoulders into it whether you agreed to dance or not. The vocal is a single chopped phrase, take our time, looped and filtered until it stops being words and becomes another percussion hit. What I love is the patience the extended mix allows: it takes a full ninety seconds to properly arrive, letting the groove breathe and build instead of front-loading everything for a short attention span. There’s a breakdown two thirds in where the bass cuts and a lone hi-hat swings alone for eight bars, and the tension before it all crashes back is delicious. This is unashamed dancefloor tackle with a sense of humour, the sort of thing that gets a lukewarm room committed inside a minute. I’ve caught myself doing the shoulder thing at the kitchen table twice while writing this. Turn it on before people arrive and watch the night find its feet.
