NEOTEK & ARCTURA - Fire

If you’ve got a soft spot for the big, emotional end of bass music and you’re tired of pretending you don’t, Fire is going to find you. NEOTEK and ARCTURA are deep in melodic bass territory here, the Monstercat house style where the drops are about the feeling as much as the impact. It opens on a vocal and a piano that promise a straight ballad and then the low end arrives to complicate that promise, a growl big enough to fill a stadium sitting under a topline reaching for the rafters. That contrast is the whole genre in miniature, prettiness and heaviness fighting over the same three minutes and both somehow winning. The vocal is drenched in the kind of longing this style runs on, the sort of performance that would be too much in a quieter setting and lands just right buried in all this weight. The production is glossy to a mirror shine, every element buffed until it gleams, and that much polish usually leaves me cold, but underneath the sheen the thing plainly means it. It reaches for maximum feeling at maximum volume and never once flinches. There’s a final drop that pulls an extra layer of synth out of nowhere just when you think it’s spent, and that greedy little escalation is the moment that got me. Huge and earnest and completely uninterested in being cool about it, which is exactly why it works.
