Said The Sky, ILLENIUM & Heather Sommer - When The Light Breaks

This is going to be enormous and there’s no point pretending otherwise. Said The Sky and ILLENIUM are the two producers who basically built the modern melodic-bass sound, the one where emo-adjacent vocals meet a drop designed to make a stadium cry, and “When The Light Breaks” is them running it at full power with Heather Sommer carrying the roof. You know the shape: an aching build, a beat of silence, then a drop that’s more emotional than heavy. It works because Sommer is genuinely great rather than a topline placeholder. There’s a crack in her delivery on the final chorus that does more than any synth on the track, a tiny break in the voice right where the melody peaks, and it’s the thing I keep rewinding to. The guitar-tinged lead in the second drop is the ILLENIUM fingerprint, and I’ve long since stopped resisting it. Yes, these two have made this exact song a dozen times over. This happens to be one of the better dozen, and knowing the trick doesn’t stop the trick from working on me. I put it on at a reasonable hour and immediately wanted it at festival volume with a field of people around me. Made for sunsets and for ugly-crying in a parked car, both of which are entirely valid uses of four minutes.
