Ophelia has a house style and this is it, distilled to the bone. Evergreen is the sound of three acts who all live on Seven Lions’ label pooling their instincts into one big weepy melodic-dubstep cathedral, and I mean that with more affection than the description probably deserves. Last Heroes and STAR SEED handle the architecture, Wicks handles the heartbreak, and the result is exactly the kind of track that makes a festival field put its phone lights up without anyone asking. The build does the usual Ophelia thing, a fragile vocal over pads that swell until you brace for impact, and then the drop pays it off with a lead that sounds like a church organ that got into a fight. What keeps it from being wallpaper is Wicks. Her voice has a crack in it on the high notes that reads as actually hurt rather than performing hurt, and that small human wobble is what the whole glossy production ends up organised around. I have a high tolerance for this stuff and even I noticed the drop recycles a chord progression this label has leaned on for years. It does not matter much when the feeling underneath is this earnest. Sometimes you just want the cathedral.
