Ended up rewatching the video at 2am with the lights off, which is probably the correct environment for anything Seven Lions makes. Strange and Eternal is the man doing his signature move, the one where trance and dubstep stop arguing and agree to cry together, and after this many years he is still better at it than the people who copied him into a whole subgenre. The track opens almost ambient, a single vocal line floating over reverb, before the low end arrives like weather. What I keep coming back to is how little he rushes. The opening stretch is nearly empty, just that voice and air, and he trusts you to stay for a payoff he refuses to hand over early. The drop itself is enormous and a little sad, a detuned synth doing the heavy lifting where a lesser track would reach for a scream. It is festival music that somehow works alone in a dark room, which is a harder test to pass than a field full of people. Genuinely moved, slightly embarrassed about it.
