Seven Lions & Kill The Noise - I Need

Two producers from opposite corners of bass music made the exact track you’d hope for and somehow didn’t overthink it. “I Need” pairs Seven Lions’ weepy, trance-soaked melodrama with Kill The Noise’s appetite for making things hurt, and the seam between those two instincts is where all the fun is. The intro floats up on the kind of soaring, faintly Enya-adjacent vocal Seven Lions could write blindfolded, and just as you settle into the pretty part Kill The Noise kicks the legs out and the drop lands somewhere between euphoric and vicious. It’s melodic dubstep that actually earns the “dubstep” half for once, instead of using it as set dressing around a festival singalong. The back half switches the drop pattern up rather than copy-pasting the first one, which is the difference between a collaboration and two guys emailing stems. There’s a real songwriting bone under the sound design, and it keeps the whole thing from collapsing into pure spectacle. Loud, a little ridiculous, and completely committed to it.
