Fresh Laundry & Maya Sarkissian - Ghost Town

MrSuicideSheep uploads have a house style, pretty and melodic and a little melancholy, and Ghost Town fits the mould while quietly being better than most of what lands there. Fresh Laundry builds the track around Maya Sarkissian’s vocal, which has a cracked, close-mic’d quality that makes the whole thing feel like it was recorded at 3am in an empty apartment. It’s electronic music more interested in mood than in a drop, and when the beat finally arrives it’s understated on purpose, more heartbeat than bassline. The production leaves a lot of space, reverb tails and a single held synth and the sense of a big empty room, and that restraint is what sells the title. I keep coming back to the little vocal stutter on the second verse, a glitch that sounds deliberate and lands like a catch in the throat. This is headphones-on-the-last-train music, not festival music, and it’s honest about that. Sometimes you don’t want to be hit, you want to be quietly gutted. This does the second one really well, and it does it without ever raising its voice.
