Eli Brown has turned into one of the most dependable names in peak-time techno, and Damaged is another brick in that wall. This is 2am music, dark and driving, built for a room with no windows and a fog machine working overtime. The bassline is a relentless, distorted throb that doesn’t let up for the full runtime, and over it Brown lays a vocal chopped and processed into something between a threat and a come-on. It’s the sound of the big warehouse techno that took over the UK these last few years, and Brown does it about as well as anyone currently working. What keeps it from turning generic is the restraint in the arrangement; he trusts a groove to carry three minutes without constantly throwing new elements at you. The tension is all in the tiny filter movements, the way the hi-hats open a fraction more each bar until you’re leaning forward without noticing. I don’t always reach for techno this functional, this designed-for-the-floor, but when it’s made with this much control I don’t want to argue with it. Play it too quiet and it’s wallpaper; play it at the volume it wants and it takes over the room. This is a professional at work, and sometimes that’s the whole appeal.
