• Delta Heavy - Set You Free

Delta Heavy make the kind of drum and bass engineered to detonate in a field at sunset, and “Set You Free” doesn’t waste a second pretending otherwise. Big vocal, bigger drop, full euphoria, no apologies. The hook genuinely soars rather than just sitting there at volume, and there’s a low-end punch under all the brightness that stops it drifting into weightless trance-lite. It’s the sort of topline written to be screamed back by ten thousand people who never learned the verses, and that’s a feature. Two-thirds through comes a half-time switch I didn’t see arriving, ten seconds of gut-check before the final lift, and it’s the best moment here. Delta Heavy have been at this long enough that the mechanics go invisible; the build never feels like a build, it just feels like the ceiling of the room slowly lifting off. This is unapologetic crowd music that happens to be very good at the job. I’d have hated it at nineteen, when I was sure difficult meant good. Older me just wants to jump.

1 minute. You read this in less time than Chris Martin says 'thank you, beautiful crowd'.
