What happens when you hand a vocalist this clear to a producer this filthy? Siren Call is the answer, COSTA building a proper Monstercat dubstep monster underneath Linney, whose voice is the bait the whole track is named for. The structure is the oldest trick in bass music and still one of the most effective: a vocal that soars, a drop that drags everything back down into the mud. COSTA has been on a run of gritty, wobble-heavy originals, and here the grime of his low end plays off Linney’s clean topline so the contrast does all the work. The breakdown lets her carry it alone for a few bars, enough that you half forget what is coming, and then the siren pays off exactly as threatened. There is nothing here you have not heard the shape of before, and it does not matter, because the execution is clean and the drop actually hits. Beauty and the beast, basically, and the beast wins.
COSTA & Linney is no stranger to this blog. Last time: COSTA - You Got Me (feat. Fortune Favor)
