• COSTA - You Got Me (feat. Fortune Favor)

Three plays deep before I even clocked the vocal hook, which is not how I usually listen to anything. COSTA’s “You Got Me” is dubstep with the melodic dial turned up, a big emotive topline from Fortune Favor riding into a drop that actually has teeth. The design in that first drop is the sell: a growl that sounds like it’s straining to form a word and can’t quite get there, and that human strain does more work than any amount of screech ever could. There’s a half-time section near the back where the drums cut out and the sub just breathes for a bar, and that pocket of space is what makes the last drop feel earned instead of merely loud. Fortune Favor carries the hook without oversinging a line of it, which is rarer in this lane than it should be. It’s Monstercat comfort food, made by someone who still sweats the small details. Turn it up and let it do the damage.

1 minute. You read this in less time than Chris Martin says 'thank you, beautiful crowd'.
