• Cephas Azariah & Kidnap - Lightning

Sunday, flat still a mess from the weekend, and this came on shuffle and made me sit down on the floor rather than finish cleaning. Lightning is Kidnap, the Sheffield producer who has spent a decade making melodic house that aims for the chest instead of the feet, working with Cephas Azariah, whose voice carries a gospel weight most dance vocalists would kill for. Together they have made the kind of record that sounds like relief. Kidnap’s whole approach has always been patience, letting a chord progression breathe and a groove settle before anything dramatic happens, and Lightning trusts that completely. The drop, if you can even call it that, is less an impact than a widening, the track opening up around the vocal until the room feels bigger than it is. Azariah sings like he means every word and lets each line land without decoration. There is a piano buried in the mix that I did not catch until the fourth play, holding the whole thing together underneath. I have had Kidnap records soundtrack genuinely important moments of my life, and this one already feels like it is angling for the same job. Some tracks make you dance. This one made me call someone back.

1-min read. About as long as a Coldplay key change takes to ruin a song.
