• Camo & Krooked & Mefjus - Redemption (feat. Joe Killington)

This is the drum and bass collab I didn’t know I’d been waiting for. Camo & Krooked bring the widescreen melody, Mefjus brings the engineering-degree bass design, and somehow the two halves don’t fight each other. They take turns. Redemption opens like a Camo & Krooked tune, all cinematic pads and Joe Killington’s voice doing that ache-y thing he does, and then Mefjus’s fingerprints show up in the drop, which is tighter and nastier than either act tends to go alone. The bass at the first drop has a metallic edge that could only be his. What gets me is the restraint: three of the most technical people in the genre in one room and they resisted the urge to cram it full. There’s air in it. The breakdown gives Killington’s vocal room to actually land before the second drop comes back harder. Twelve years into both these acts and they still sound hungry, which is not a given. I’ve played it four times back to back trying to work out whose track it actually is and I’ve given up. It’s both, and it’s better for it.
