• YORK x Bella Claxton & Mike Momburg - On The Beach

If you had a radio anywhere near a dancefloor around 2000, On The Beach is already lodged somewhere in your memory, even if you never knew the name YORK. The German project, brothers Torsten and Jorg Stenzel, turned a Chris Rea guitar line into one of the defining trance anthems of its era, a top-five hit that sold a couple hundred thousand copies on the strength of one impossibly summery riff. So a 2026 rework of it is a risky piece of nostalgia, the sort of thing that usually ends in a limp big-room cash-in. This one mostly earns the callback. Bella Claxton, the Melbourne-via-Amsterdam DJ who has been tearing up festival stages with harder, faster sets, brings a modern propulsion to it, and Mike Momburg keeps the production current without sanding off the melody that made the original work. That riff is still the star, obviously, because you cannot improve on it, you can only reframe it, and they are smart enough to know that. The update gives it more low-end push and a cleaner, bigger drop for today’s systems, but the melody itself is untouched, which is the only correct decision. The world did not need another On The Beach. But if someone was going to attempt it, doing it with this much affection beats doing it as a brand exercise. It made me feel about nineteen, which is exactly the trick it was going for.

1-minute read. Already more thought than the average 'Yellow' replay.
