• Tantrum Desire - Step

Tantrum Desire have been making this exact flavor of muscular, tech-leaning drum and bass for over a decade and they almost never miss, which is why “Step” went straight into my rotation without a second thought. The title is a small joke once it kicks, because the whole track is built on a stepping, mechanical groove that feels like a machine learning to walk and getting cocky about it. There’s no big vocal hook, no obvious festival moment, just relentless engineering and a bassline that keeps mutating every eight bars so you can’t quite settle into it. That restlessness is the point. A lot of DnB this clean gets boring because it’s too polished to surprise you, but Tantrum Desire keep flicking little switches in the arrangement that yank your attention back. I put it on while answering email and ended up not answering any email. The mix is gorgeous too, every drum hit placed with that surgical UK precision that makes the whole thing feel expensive. If you’ve drifted away from drum and bass because the scene got soft, this is the kind of track that drags you back by the collar.

1-min. Faster than skipping past a Coldplay ad on Spotify.
