• Small Potatoes

Eighteen American soldiers are dead and the president called it small potatoes.

That’s a direct quote. Donald Trump sat in the Oval Office on Thursday and said the war he started with Iran is “small potatoes” because only eighteen Americans died. He compared it to Vietnam — the logic being that because fewer people died than in a war that killed fifty-eight thousand over twenty years, this one barely registers. Eighteen is a rounding error. Eighteen is within the margin of acceptable loss. He delivered this with the same energy you’d use to explain why you’re not tipping.

Those eighteen people had names. They had families who got a phone call or a knock on the door, and now they get to hear the Commander-in-Chief grade their deaths on a curve. JD Vance helped the day before by insisting it isn’t technically a war — just a “military conflict.” Thirty-seven and a half billion dollars and eighteen coffins, but it doesn’t count because calling it a war would mean admitting it needs Congressional authorization nobody asked for and an exit strategy nobody has. The vocabulary does a lot of heavy lifting when you don’t want to be accountable. The kid who enlisted at nineteen and came home in a flag isn’t a tragedy — he’s a stat the president tossed out to explain why Vietnam was worse.
