• Sam Divine - Paradise

Sam Divine knows exactly what a Defected record is supposed to do, and Paradise does it without a wasted second. She has been the face of that label’s warm, hands-in-the-air house sound for years, the kind of DJ who can read a terrace at golden hour and drop the one track that tips it over the edge. Paradise is built for that exact moment: a looping vocal promising somewhere better, a bassline with a little disco roll in it, a breakdown that holds just long enough to get everyone’s arms up before the kick comes back. None of it reinvents the form, and it does not need to. This is comfort-food house made by someone who has served thousands of plates and still cares how each one looks going out. I put it on while making coffee and caught myself swaying at the counter like an idiot. Sometimes that is the whole of what a house record owes you.

1-min read. About as long as a Coldplay key change takes to ruin a song.
