Walked into my own living room mid-afternoon, pressed play on Adesa half by accident, and within about eight bars the whole room’s temperature seemed to go up. This is Melé and Bontan handing the mic to K.O.G, a Ghanaian singer whose voice could reanimate a corpse, and building a proper afro-house workout underneath him. The percussion is the star here, layered hand drums and shakers and a cowbell that refuses to quit, all interlocking into a groove that feels handmade rather than programmed. K.O.G sings in what I think is Ga, and not understanding a word of it changes nothing, because the delivery carries the entire meaning on its own. The house elements stay respectfully in the background: a deep sub, a couple of organ stabs, a kick that locks everything in without ever trying to dominate. What I love is how little it leans on a traditional drop. The track just builds and breathes and builds again, more like a live band finding a pocket than a DJ tool waiting for its big moment. Around the four-minute mark the drums fall away to just hands and voice, and it’s genuinely goosebump stuff. This is what Defected does when it remembers house music came from somewhere real. Easily my favourite of their recent run.
