• Mason Collective & VLAD vs Route 94 - Tell You Why

There is a soulful vocal buried in Tell You Why that sounds like it has been sitting in a cloakroom since 2014, waiting for exactly this beat to come pick it up. That is roughly the point: this is Mason Collective going head to head with Route 94, the man behind My Love, that organ-and-vocal house record you heard nine hundred times the summer it landed and somehow never fully got sick of. Defected has been mining its own golden era hard lately, and most of those attempts are lazy; this one is not. Mason Collective bring the drier, rubberier tech-house drums of right now and let the vocal do the emotional lifting it was always built for. The groove is relentless in the quiet way good house is relentless, a bassline that loops and loops until your body makes the call before your brain catches up. There is a breakdown where the drums drop out and the vocal hangs alone for a few bars, and the room always does the same thing there, that shared intake of breath before the kick slams back. It is warm and physical and built with a complete understanding of how a floor behaves at midnight. Route 94 clearly still has it, and Mason Collective were smart enough to get out of the vocal’s way. I would play this to a crowd pretending to be too cool to dance and watch the pretending come apart.

1 min on this. Less time than the wait for the drop in a Coldplay 'banger'.
