• Martyno Dowsha feat. Junior Paes - Phrases

If you miss the era when trance was allowed to be openly emotional, “Phrases” is going to hit a nerve. Martyno Dowsha teams with vocalist Junior Paes for vocal trance that doesn’t apologise for wanting to make you feel something enormous. The build is the classic one, plucked arps and a rising pad and a snare roll you can see coming from a mile off, and when the melody finally breaks open it goes straight for the euphoric jugular. Paes has a warm, slightly husky voice that keeps the whole track grounded and human. Modern trance tends to either harden into psy or dissolve into festival mush, and this holds the emotional middle that made people fall for the genre in the first place. Around the four-minute mark there’s a hands-in-the-air moment I did not see coming, and it got me completely. Corny, sincere, and all the better for being both.

1-minute read. Already more thought than the average 'Yellow' replay.
