This wrecked me a little and I wasn’t braced for it. Stay Right Here is built around Lyrah’s voice, which is the whole event, cracked and close-mic’d and mixed right up front where you catch every breath. The production stays deliberately out of her way, a slow pulse of sub bass and a few piano chords left to ring out, nothing competing for the spotlight. When the beat finally arrives it’s restrained, a soft two-step shuffle more than a drop, the electronics serving the song instead of hijacking it. Too much vocal electronic music treats the singer as a sample to be chopped into confetti, and this does the opposite, trusting that a good performance needs room more than it needs processing. The lyric is a plain plea not to be left, and she sells it without a single melodic acrobatic. By the last chorus I’d stopped thinking of it as a dance track at all. Sometimes the best thing a producer can do is get out of the way.
