Been sat with this one for a couple of days and it keeps getting prettier. “Lament” is liquid drum and bass in the properly emotional sense, the kind where the breakbeat is doing 170 but the whole thing still feels like it’s floating. Breezy Lee’s vocal is the anchor, wounded and warm, and IYRE wraps it in liquid pads that catch the light differently every time the chords shift. The bass is round and soft, more of a hug than a punch. What gets me is how the drums stay so busy and skittish underneath something this calm, that tension between the frantic rhythm and the serene surface. It shouldn’t be as soothing as it is at that tempo. The breakdown drops the drums out entirely for a bar and lets the vocal hang in open air before the beat folds back in, and that little pocket of silence is the best few seconds here. I put it on to test something and ended up just listening to the whole thing twice.
