Is this the Icona Pop comeback anyone actually asked for, or just the one we’re getting? “Hurt” is the Swedish duo doing the thing they’ve done since “I Love It,” shouting catchy, slightly bratty hooks over a big electro-pop beat, and depending on your tolerance that’s either a comfort or a problem. I land in the middle. The hook is undeniably sticky, the kind of chant that’ll be rattling around your head against your will by tonight, and the production has a bright, festival-ready punch that hits where it aims. But there’s a formula fatigue setting in. This is the same shouted-empowerment template they’ve leaned on since 2012, and “Hurt” doesn’t update it much beyond a slightly harder drop and a cleaner mix. The energy is real and the chorus works, no arguing that. What’s missing is any sense of risk, any moment where they surprise you rather than handing over exactly what the title and the band name already promised. It’s fun while it plays and gone by the next song. For some records that’s plenty. This one just left me wishing they’d reached past the template they’ve been coasting on for years. The talent is obviously still there. The ambition took the night off.
