Yesterday Donald Trump took a lap around downtown Washington in an armored limousine, waved a green flag, and 150,000 people watched open-wheel race cars tear down Pennsylvania Avenue at 160 miles per hour. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix — part of the America 250 birthday bash — turned the National Mall into a racetrack. Meanwhile, buried in a report nobody covered on a Saturday: SNAP enrollment dropped from 42.2 million to 36.6 million in twelve months. 5.6 million people lost food assistance in the same year the president turned the capital into a speedway. Arizona alone lost more than half its recipients. Not because people stopped being hungry. Because the paperwork got harder.
The work requirements in Trump’s tax-and-spending bill didn’t create jobs. They created bureaucratic tripwires. Miss a recertification deadline, lose your groceries. Fail to document 80 hours of work in a state where the minimum wage doesn’t cover rent, and you’re off the rolls. The administration calls it “encouraging workforce participation.” The food banks in Phoenix and Baton Rouge have a different word for it. Georgia, Louisiana, Nevada, Florida — all down 20% or more. Nobody in any of those states got less hungry. The form just got longer.
The cars on Pennsylvania Avenue cost about $3 million each. The average SNAP benefit is $6.20 per person per day. A country that can shut down its own capital for a car race can feed the people living in it. It just doesn’t want to.
