Had this on in the kitchen and a PEEKABOO drop nearly took a mug off the counter. Energy started life as a Flava D and Stush tune, UK through and through, Stush toasting with that dancehall snap over Flava D’s bassline bounce. PEEKABOO drags it somewhere darker and heavier, the kind of deep rubbery US bass he has built a whole lane out of over at Deadbeats. What is smart is how he keeps Stush front and center instead of chopping the vocal into confetti the way most bass remixes would. The low end does that PEEKABOO thing where it stops sounding like a bass note and starts sounding like pressure arriving in the room. Flava D’s original was built to skip; this version is built to loom, and hearing the same vocal survive both treatments says a lot about how good the hook was to begin with. Two very different corners of bass music meeting on one track and neither one blinking.
