The original Energy was a dubstep tune, all weight and half-time swagger, so hearing Napes drag it up to drum and bass tempo does something clever: the Stush vocal that sat heavy over the original now has to sprint to keep up, and it sounds better for the chase. Flava D has spent years refusing to pick a lane, bouncing between UKG, dubstep and a whole drum and bass album on Hospital, and her tracks survive this kind of surgery because the bones are strong. Stush brings that raw, patois-inflected toughness UK dance music has always been better with, a voice with actual grit on it. Napes keeps the vocal front and centre and builds a rolling, slightly rude bassline underneath that nods to the jump-up end of things without going full cartoon. It is the rare remix that justifies its own existence rather than just slapping a faster drum pattern onto a track that was already fine. The energy, no pun intended, is relentless. This is exactly what UKF Drum & Bass exists to find. Big, loud, grinning the whole way through.
