Everything But The Girl - Run A Red Light (Logistics Remix)

That voice is unmistakable inside two bars; Tracey Thorn could sing a grocery list and make it sound like the loneliest thing you’ve ever heard. Everything But The Girl handing “Run A Red Light” to Logistics is a small piece of poetry if you know the history: this is the duo whose “Missing” got turned into a global smash by a house remix back in the nineties, essentially writing the template for taking a melancholy pop song and letting a dance producer set it free. Logistics, a Hospital Records lifer who’s been making liquid drum and bass since before some of the channel’s listeners were born, treats the source with obvious reverence. He keeps Thorn’s vocal front and center and builds a rolling, golden-hour breakbeat underneath it that never once elbows her out of frame. This is grown-up drum and bass, wistful and spacious, the kind you put on at the end of a night rather than the peak of it. The bassline is round and deep and walks under everything without asking for attention. What kills me is how well the two eras fit: a vocal from people who’ve been at this for forty years, over breaks from a producer who clearly grew up worshipping the sound they helped inspire. It’s a full-circle thing, and it’s gorgeous.
