Doctor P - Shots

Doctor P has been making the same promise since Circus Records was the center of the universe: a bass patch so stupid it loops back around to genius. “Shots” keeps that promise. The drop is one of those honking, elastic lead sounds he basically patented a decade ago, except the mix around it is tighter and meaner than the old stuff, less mud in the low mids, more room for the wobble to actually swing. What I keep coming back to is the restraint before it lands, a good four bars where he just teases the shape of the bassline without committing, so when the full thing hits you’ve already leaned in. There’s a cheeky little vocal chop stabbing through the second half that sounds like it’s laughing at you. It just wants your neck to hurt tomorrow, and mine does. Fifteen years into this and the man still builds a drop like he’s showing off at a house party in front of people he’s trying to impress. Old-school brostep by someone who never stopped enjoying the joke.
