Dark, driving, and entirely the point. Dave Angel is a UK techno lifer who’s been making records since the early ’90s — R&S, Rotation, the whole London-via-Detroit lineage — and “Down Deep” sounds exactly like a guy who has nothing to prove. The kick sits low, the hats sit high, the mid stays out of the way. There’s a hypnotic loop that doesn’t really evolve so much as creep, which is the trick with techno this restrained: you stop noticing the seconds. No big breakdown, no white-noise riser pretending to be a moment. Music for the 4am hour where the lights are red and your jaw is doing things. Means business.
