Put this on at a function and watch the room reorganize itself around the low end. “Bad Like We” is Danny Byrd doing what Hospital Records built its whole reputation on: dnb that keeps one foot in the sound system and one in the pop hook, so it works at 2pm in the car and 2am in a sweatbox with equal ease. Doktor’s vocal rides in with that ragga-tinged bounce dnb has been borrowing from Jamaica for thirty years, and Shapes wires it to a bassline that struts rather than stomps. At 1:48 the drums cut out for a half-bar and the whole track inhales before the second drop kicks the door back in, and that little vacuum is the best two seconds on offer here. What makes it land is how unbothered it sounds; there’s no straining for cool, no attempt to be darker or heavier than the tune wants to be, just three people who clearly enjoy each other’s company making something bright and cheeky. Danny Byrd has been this reliable for so long that people forget to be impressed by him, which is its own kind of unfair. He’s outlasted about four different eras of the genre by never once chasing the trend of the moment. Twenty years in and he still writes a hook like he’s got something to prove. This is the sound of a Friday deciding to be a good one.
