• D.O.D & Izzy Bizu - Careful

If you only know Izzy Bizu from her soulful pop stuff, this will reframe her for you. D.O.D pulls her onto a proper house record for “Careful” and her voice turns out to be perfect for it, that slightly husky, conversational tone cutting clean through a bassline that bumps along like it has somewhere to be. D.O.D has been reliably turning out this kind of polished, radio-ready house for years, and this is one of his catchiest in a while. The drop is deceptively simple: a bouncing bass under a filtered stab, with Bizu’s vocal chopped into the gaps so the groove and the hook end up being the same thing. It works at a festival and equally at a summer barbecue where nobody’s technically dancing but everyone’s moving anyway. What sells it is Bizu, who brings warmth to what could easily have been a faceless, functional house tune. There’s a version of this track that’s forgettable filler, and D.O.D dodged it entirely by hiring a singer with actual character. I’ve had it on all afternoon and it hasn’t worn out its welcome once. Grown-up house music that still remembers how to have fun.

1 minute. Used wisely. Unlike most Coldplay run-times.
