This is the one off this week’s pile I’ve gone back to the most, and it isn’t close. “Rumination” is BOP working the deep, melodic liquid drum and bass lane that’s made a name at Hospital Records: lush, unhurried, more interested in mood than muscle. The intro takes its time, layering a warm pad and a lonely piano figure before the drums even think about arriving, and when they do it’s a soft, rolling break that carries you rather than shoves you. The bassline is a low, round sub you feel in your chest more than your ears, and over the top there’s a melody that keeps circling back on itself, which is presumably the whole idea behind the title. It’s music for the exact headspace of being awake at 3am with your thoughts running laps, and it captures that without ever tipping into misery. The gaps between the hits are the part that gets me. The track breathes where a lesser producer would keep filling. I’ve had it on for late-night writing three nights running and it turns a dark hour into a calm one instead of a bleak one. Liquid dnb this good is a genuine balm. Best thing I’ve heard all week, and I’ve heard a lot this week.
