Dirtybird tracks always sound like they were made by people having way too much fun, and Pulse is no exception. Body Ocean & Matsu have absorbed the label’s whole ethos, that mix of booty-shaking low end and a wink that says don’t take any of this too seriously. The groove here is elastic and physical, built around a bassline that bounces like it’s made of actual rubber and a vocal snippet chopped into nonsense syllables. It’s house music for people who think most house music takes itself too seriously, which has always been Dirtybird’s entire reason for existing. The drop at 1:50 is pure mischief, yanking out almost everything except kick and bass before the bounce comes roaring back. I can’t listen to this sitting down, it’s physically impossible. There’s a squelchy acid line that weaves through the back half and adds just enough grit to keep it from being purely silly. Music to make a sweaty basement very happy. Daft in exactly the right proportions.
